SBS Dateline (update)
The SBS Ombudsman reviewed the Dateline program featuring Ta Ann Tasmania aired on 21 August 2012, against its codes of practice provisions for accuracy, impartiality and balance and found the program to "have breached the provisions of the code. The Ombudsman considered that the "totality of the report was inaccurate and misleading."
The ombudsman advised in this letter that "SBS apologises to Ta Ann Tasmania for this breach of the SBS Codes of Practice".
SBS documentaries are normally known for the highest standards of accuracy, impartiality and balance. It is disappointing that Ta Ann both in Sarawak and Tasmania believes it has been unfairly treated by this report. In terms of a lack of balance, Ta Ann provided detailed responses to the many outrageous allegations made against it; these responses were edited from the final program.

Trials of wider source of log standards.
Ta Ann Tasmania is conducting trials in June 2012 of logs from native forest regrowth and plantations that are outside its current specifications of useable billets.
Ta Ann's rotary veneer mills process native and plantation logs, 20 to 70 centimetres in diameter that are generally free of defects in terms of shape, form and knots. The new trials will look at recovery from logs which have more defects and some with a smaller diameter.
Tasmanian Resources Minister, Bryan Green, announced the company’s trial using these smaller and lower quality peeler logs. He says a permanent change could free up forests for reservations under the state's peace talks to reduce native forest logging."That might help ensure that we can come up with a volume for Ta Ann out of the existing mix that allows some room within the negotiations," he said.
